Let's Sell Something!
The Internet has done amazing things to
the world marketplaces.  Items we once
sold at garage sales to an audience of
maybe 75 people can now be sold on the
Internet to an audience of millions, driving
sales prices higher and in many cases
matching items with buyers that would have
never come together just 10 years ago.
While many people have purchased over
the Internet, far less have sold.  On eBay for
example, of all the registered users, only
8% are sellers.  There is work involved, and
you need to be diligent as there are
unscrupulous people in these larger
audiences.

Through these pages we'll offer
suggestions, on how to sell, where to sell,
and highlight some of the things to
cautious of.  Selling on the internet can
bring great returns for your items, and even
introduce you to some excellent buyers
around the world.

Selling on eBay is a great place to start.   This site has the traffic, funding and
tools to help new sellers get involved in selling online.  Sales formats at eBay
include fixed price, auction, dutch auction and more.  Click the eBay link above
to see our links on how to get started selling on eBay as well as tips on what
sells best.

The auction arm of Overstock offers a timed bidding format similar to eBay.  The
category and type of items listed for sale here is comparable to the
Overstock.com outlet only serving up a smaller number of items and fewer
categories.  We did notice a small quantity of Business and Industrial assets
here and found the most populated category to be computers.
Selling Tips!
We could write a book about the best methods for selling over the Internet, we'll keep it to a few key
recommendations.

1.  Beware of the fraudulent!
As a seller your basic contact information is open to a broad audience and it is likely that people will
attempt to trick you into divulging personal information that can be used to access your accounts,
shipping your item without valid payment, and more.
  • Don't accept payment through Western Union
  • Don't accept a credit card from an international buyer unless you can validate them.  This goes
    especially for transactions with Indonesia.
  • In general be very skeptical of any payment requests outside of the mainstream.
  • Don't ship your item without having received payment for it.
  • If someone sends you a link to an Escrow service do not click on it.  If you know an escrow
service go directly to it.  There are a lot of spoof escrow sites out there.

2. Think like a buyer! Use words in your title and description that buyers will search on.  Take great
photographs and be sure and capture the important aspects of the items you are selling.  Be accurate
and honest about the condition

3. Shipping If it's of value, Insure it and track it.  In most cases the buyer pays for shipping and while you
will be requested to use less expensive methods, only do so on items you can afford to loose.  On
higher priced items, most good buyers are willing to pay for a quality service.  Just be sure to specify
how you will handle shipping up front so it should not be a surprise.

4. Use something unique for your password.  Do not use the same ID and Password for everything as
everything could be exposed it falls into the wrong hands, and choose passwords that are not obvious...
don't use a password that is the same as the ID, or the word "Password", etc.
